inside surf road: how Liz styles shelves and bookcases, and how you can recreate the look

There really is an art to styling the perfect shelf or set of shelves. Keeping in mind color, scale, texture and more can be super overwhelming! With this in mind I've compiled a few quick tips to help you style the perfect #shelfie!

I spent legitimately 2 days (more if you count all the time ordering the pieces!) styling these bookcases, and I'm here to tell you if you're struggling with your own shelf, you are most definitely not alone!

SO, what are the elements of creating the perfect shelfie?! Keep scrolling....

  1. SCALE: You want a variety of heights in your pieces. You want to pair shorter things next to taller things. You can do this by pairing two vases of different heights next to each other, or you can prop something shorter up on a stack of books, coasters, a jewelry box, etc. You'll want to do a mix of both of these tactics to create an interesting shelf design.

  2. COLOR: Keep color consistent. To keep it simple, stick to 2-3 colors in the same tone. Your shelf should be a consistent and coherent mix of these 3 colors, without being chaotic or too patterned.

  3. BE ORIGINAL: As tempting as it can be, don't just go to Target and buy everything in the Studio McGee section. Your shelf should be a collection of pieces from a variety of places to keep it interesting. It should be a mix of photos, books, and interesting design elements you have collected over time and that mean something to you.

  4. GIVE IT LIFE: Adding plants to your shelf will bring it to life and keep it ever-changing. Choose a variety of types and heights as well as a variety of colors. The trick to this is putting them in similar planters to give your shelf a cohesive look.
