Get to know our artists for the Fall mantelpiece set: meg dauphinais of helleborn designs
Next up in our Mantel Kit series is Meg Dauphinais of Helleborn Designs.
Meg has been making whatever she can with the materials at hand since she can remember. Creativity is a lifeline for her and whether it’s baking, cocktail creation (you can find her at Portland hot spot Twelve most nights!), sewing, making jewelry or working for Liz as Surf Road's Design Assistant, she finds a way to keep her hands moving.
Helleborn is the product of many years of making art as a hobby after graduating from Massart with a degree in Studio for Interrelated Media, and deciding it was time to narrow it down and get her crafts out to the people. Through Helleborn, Meg sells her handmade jewelry, overalls, and wax painted collage postcards. Having a hard time committing to only one craft, she finds this mix to be a nice balance of 2D artwork, 3D craft and textile. There is just too much beauty in the world to be limited to one creative outlet!
We will be incorporating Meg’s sewing skills in the fall mantelpiece through a simple windowpane plaid runner. Meg took up sewing after spending many nights drinking wine and chatting with her Nana. Lee (Nana) learned to sew from her mother who was an incredible seamstress, creating every item of beautiful clothing that Lee and her brothers wore growing up from nothing but scraps. Seeing the passion that her Nana expressed while talking about her own mother’s sewing sparked an urge to carry on the tradition for Meg, and she asked to borrow Lee’s old machine. Loving all of the overalls she was seeing online but wanting something that fit her own body and style, she started crafting overalls. Interest quickly began to peak from the masses of the outside world, and so Meg put together the three crafts she could crank out from her home studio and sell at maker’s markets.
