Exploring Casco Bay on our New Boat

This summer we unlocked what feels like a 3rd dimension, getting a family cruiser style boat for our family, which we keep moored at our neighborhood beach for super easy access! While the weather so far has not been amazing for boating, we have been taking EVERY opportunity (and lots of layers and blankets!!!) to explore this new world. In the little time we've had, we've found some new spots that are super special, and I'm excited to share them with you for your next boating adventure!

Beyond Fort Gorges: OUr Favorite Casco Bay Spots

  1. Grab a mooring in Cocktail Cove: This spot located right off the dock at Great Diamond Island is secluded from the wind and waves, and a great little spot to grab a mooring and chill for a bit. Just be sure to avoid letting the kids kayak over to the rocks when the Ferry is about to pull in, we learned that one the hard way. SMH.

  2. Explore the beach at Sand Island: We recently anchored here and the kids braved the freezing water and swam in to the beach from the boat. The private island features a man-made home that houses the caretaker all summer, and he is more than happy to give tours! The kids also enjoyed climbing over the rocks and jumping off the float that rests near the beach.

  3. Get an ice cream at Cliff Island: The Cliff Island Store and Cafe is as adorable as you can possibly imagine and offers a variety of ice cream you can enjoy on their quaint deck overlooking the water.

  4. Dial Takeout from Flatbread: Cruise over to the Portland Harbor and call in a pizza to flatbread for takeout. We pulled right in to the taxi dock directly next to the restaurant, and Kyle waited on the boat with the kids while I ran in and grabbed our dinner. We took ours over to Sturdivant Island in Cumberland to meet my dad for a raft up.

  5. Make a reservation at Crown Jewel or Chebeague Island Inn: Leave it to Maine to reserve some of the finest dining for those only able to access them by boat! We had a delicious brunch for my birthday on Chebeague Island, grabbing a dock spot right out front and walking up the hill to the Inn. Next week we are headed to Crown Jewel for an early reservation with some friends, and reserved a dock spot using the Dockwa app!

Boating Nice TO Haves

Since we've been out a few times we have realized a few things that are nice to have on the boat, to make things a little easier or a little more fun.
