Introducing The Surf Road Book Club

As a working mother, I sometimes find myself in reading ruts. I'm so tired at the end of the day, and all I want to do is veg out and watch TV. Before the Pandemic I was a part of two wonderful book clubs, which got me reading at least a book every month. Since then, however, it's been hard to motivate myself to pick up a book! Not to mention, I am often at a loss as to where to start in the book selection process.

Last month I decided to poll all of you on Instagram about what you're reading, and got some amazing replies. Turns out, you all are reading a lot more than me! This got me motivated though, and I quickly blew through a couple of great books!

My Bookclub Picks for July

You will see a theme in the books I'm drawn to... your girl likes a mystery.

I started with Just The Nicest Couple by Mary Kubica. It's the story of two young couples who are friends when one of the husbands goes missing. It's a real "who done it" with a surprising twist at the end! It kept me turning the pages and was a very quick read.

Next I moved on to The Housemaid by Freida McFadden, which is a similar genre, about a convicted felon who gets out of jail and takes a job as a housemaid for a wealthy family. The story starts off in the middle of a shit storm where the police are searching the house, and then takes you back to the beginning of the story where you read all the details unfolding. Again there were twists and turns, and it kept my attention for the few days it took me to read it!

After finishing this book is where things started to take a turn, leading me to my third and final book of the month: The Art of Raising A Puppy by the Monks of New Skete. The cat (or the dog, rather) is pretty much out of the bag on this one so I am excited to announce formally that we are getting a puppy next year. After weeks of working on my husband to give it another try (IYKYK), I finally wore him down. But he needs some time to get used to the idea, and the timing needs to be right, hence after next ski season, likely in March or May 2024. We are on the waiting list, and more details to come in the coming months, but for now I am reading up as much as I can about how to make this go around a wild success. You'll be seeing a few more dog-related books in the coming month's.

I really LOVED this book, which is about a group of Monks in New Skete, New York, who raise German Shepherd puppies. It's all about how to train your dog to be a companion who fits into your life, rather than completely altering your life to accommodate a dog. It discusses the nature of dogs, as pack animals, and how that plays into training and raising a lifelong best friend. My copy is totally highlighted and I will definitely be re-reading it a few times before we actually bring our furry friend home.

Puppy Planning

Because I am SO excited about this new addition, want to make it a huge success, and am just a control-freak planner, I have already started thinking about what we will need when we get this little baby. Of course I want all of her things to be beautiful and design-friendly to fit in with our home's aesthetic. Here are a few of the things I have my eye on to snag next year....
