When in Maine: Coastal Design Do’s and Don’ts

It should come as no surprise that here in Maine, as interior designers living on the rocky coast, we get many requests for “coastal design”. Most people will start by saying their favorite colors are blue and green. They want to “nod” to the ocean, but not be obvious about it. Nothing “kitchy”. “Oh!” we’ll say, you want the “Modern Coastal” look. Ding, ding, ding :)

This style is more Malibu than Nantucket. More Boho than beachy. It’s earthy and organic, but it is anything but nautical. You won’t find seashells or anchors in any of our designs (to the extent we have a say about it!), but you will undoubtedly get the feeling, when you walk through the home, that you’re near the water.
