throw pillow formula for any couch!

Throw pillows - they add so much to a seating look… but they can add stress too (I say as I stare at the literal heap of them on my sectional)

There are plenty of opportunities for throw pillows to cause frustration in your day to day life:

1: You can go overboard and have no idea where to put them or where to actually sit once they’re all placed.

2: You can go too minimalist and end up with a cool but random looking pillow floating around in couch land…

3: You could simply have a tough time figuring out how to stage them!

No worries! Surf Road here to lay out some pretty simple to follow “Pillow Placement Formulas” for you. Because as much as pillows can be overwhelming, they can easily and affordably change the entire look of your room!

The first look is based on a standard sectional. With a sectional there is a ton of space for pillows…. That doesn’t mean you should use it all. Keeping a limit on the amount of pillows you use for your seating, whether it be a sectional, couch, or sofa, will not only save you stress - but money! Figure out how many pillows you need. Come up with a succinct design. Go shopping with a plan. Voila! You’ve got a great looking living room and no overflow of pillows to hide in storage.

Sectional Formula:

1 large pillow in each corner (around 22”)

Coordinating smaller pillows in front in each corner (around 20” -22”)

Coordinating lumbar pillow or small pillow in 2 of the corners (around 18” -20”)

Look 2 is based on a standard couch. Stay in line with the above steps but you can limit your pillow selection even more now with fewer corners. You can see an example of some Surf Road pillow placement for the Bonus Room project we revealed a few weeks back!

Couch Formula:

1 large pillow in each corner (around 22”)

Coordinating smaller pillows in front in each corner (around 20” -22”)

1 small pillow in one corner (around 18”)

1 lumbar pillow in the other corner

Finally - let's talk about a sofa. Sofas are potentially the hardest for pillow placement because they can easily look too crowded. Keep it simple and you'll love the results!

Sofa  Formula:

Set of 3 pillows in center of couch (Large, medium, small or lumbar)

OR

1 large pillow in each corner (around 22”)

Coordinating lumbar pillow in one corner

Small pillow in other corner (around 18”)

Well that's that! Shop the above looks with the link below and of course reach out if you have a project we can help with!
